IS THERE AN ANTIMICROBIAL SURFACE PROTECTANT TO MAKE SURFACES SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) RESISTANT IN NYS?
There are currently no supplemental residual antimicrobial products for use against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) in New York State. Many disinfection companies offer an antimicrobial coating service that continuously works for an extended time to reduce the number of bacteria on a surface. Unlike disinfection products that are found on the EPA’s N list, antimicrobial coatings are restricted to a standard microbiostat EPA registration which only permits product claims of inhibiting mold, mildew, and odor causing bacteria. These products are only approved to prevent odors, staining, and deterioration caused by surface microbes. This title excludes claims that they are effective against viruses and bacteria that cause human illness. This means that they are not appropriate for controlling COVID-19.
On August 24th 2020, The Trump administration and EPA approved an emergency exemption waiver for the product, SurfaceWise2, to be used among Texas based customers. This product is the first and only EPA approved surface protectant to offer long-lasting protection against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Texas is the first state in which an emergency waiver for this product has been issued. The product manufacturer is currently pursuing this emergency waiver across all 50 states.
